A new vision of artificial intelligence for the people

Source: MIT Technology Review

In this final installment of the MIT Technology Review series on AI colonialism, Karen Hao presents the idea that artificial intelligence is creating a new colonial world order.

In opposition to the widespread mantra of ‘more is more’, that has contributed to accelerating the loss of language and culture, she argues that isolated indigenous populations should have a say in the future of AI’s development – the same communities and countries that have been impoverished by former colonial empires.

Te Hiku Media’s project to revitalize the Māori language while keeping control of their community’s data is offered as a case in point.
